Hey so

the last time I reblogged this post right before I got a great job, in a permanent work-from-home position, with benefits, retirement, and a salary literally 3x what I was making before, doing something I really like.

So you know.

This might be the real one, y’all.

hey if you’re in the U.S. and use food stamps or know somebody who does i found this online cookbook that has recipes for eating well on approximately $4/day :o)

I don’t have food stamps but I need to know how to eat well for $4/day. Thank you for this.

I love this cookbook!

Tips and tricks on how to survive being working class.

I’ve seen this kind of thing before and a lot of them are full of random weird shit you’d never make…because of time constraints or like, it just sounds super gross.

But this one had a whole section that’s just “Things on Toast”. Another that was all about putting crap in your oatmeal to make it better. Those are fairly pedestrian and don’t take forever.

I haven’t looked through the whole thing yet but so far it’s actually pretty practical. Also if you’re broke like me and don’t know how to make Dal, you should get on that.

I also liked that there’s this at the beginning:

This book isn’t challenging you to live on so little; it’s a resource in case that’s your reality. In May 2014, there were 46 million Americans on food stamps. Untold millions more—in particular, retirees and students—live under similar constraints.

Been there. Done that. Advice on this art is always welcome.

The link above seems to be broken; here’s one that still works.

Holy crap some of these recipes look delicious

I’ve been using Good and Cheap for a while now! I’m actually buying the hard copy because I cook from it so often. It’s a great way to find things that you can meal plan around without feeling like you’re going to eat the exact same meal over and over again. I cannot recommend it enough.

I use the Staples section religiously, practically.

Can still never go wrong with cooking some spam, eggs and rice!

When I don’t know what else to make for food, I almost always go for a bowl of rice with some seasoning and two eggs on top. If I have some cheese in the fridge or veggies in the freezer, I’ll add those in. And voila - easy peasy tamagohan with fixins. Cheap as hell, even with the current price of eggs.

also tangentially related to my last post - someone i worked with years ago told me about this thing she always tried to do. she said that every so often, when she’s with a friend, she let’s a stranger ‘overhear’ a compliment. she’ll go to the shop and, as she’s walking away from the till, she’ll say something like 'that cashier was so lovely, weren’t they?’. or she’ll wait until someone walks past and say 'gosh didn’t they look gorgeous in that dress’ or 'their hair looks amazing’ or 'wow that person’s tattoos were so intricate - beautiful’.

and it really stuck with me. imagine walking past someone and overhearing them say 'that outfit really suits them!’ to their friend. imagine choosing to shine a little light into the world for no other reason than because you think it’s a nice thing to do.

I’m making an effort to use Joanne Rowling’s biological name, and not the ridiculous fabrication she devised to sound more like a man and sell more books

Unfortunately for Ms. Rowling I live in the US, which does not recognize defamation judgments from other countries unless they meet the standards of free speech and expression established in US law, which UK libel laws do not. Sad!

Ok so at this point I’ve had two people roll up to me in manual wheelchairs, well, one of them was somebody pushing somebody who was nonverbal at the time, but it still counts. They asked me why I had zip ties around my tires.

It’s winter where I’m living and we have really bad snow. And the snow plow people are really bad at their jobs probably because there aren’t snow plow people who clean sidewalks. As a solution I got to thinking about how I could increase the traction on my wheels. And the most redneck thing I could think of was taking a bunch of zip ties and tying them around my wheels. They last surprisingly long, and work surprisingly well. It’s basically the same premise as chains for your tires during the winter.

I chose to space them out pretty evenly so there’s about one for every spoke. You could probably do more or less depending on how many you want and how much traction you get but I wouldn’t go more than three per spoke. I realize that it’s a bit later in the winter, and I probably should have made a post about this sooner, but I came up with it about a week ago. So please share this, even if you’re not disabled, because there are tons of people I know who are stuck in their houses because they can’t get around in the snow. A pack of zip ties costs about $5, which compared to $200 knobby snow tires is a big save, and if you want to invest you could get colored zip ties.

Also I hope everyone knows that Miette was fostered before she was adopted, and her foster mom loved that little kitten so much and always hoped she’d gone to a good home. this tweet got so popular that she recognized Miette and reached out to her current mom, and was able to share previously unseen baby pictures

You mean, she saw Miette was kicked like the football and did nothing to help put Mother in jail for a thousand years? I am appalled.
